MORE SOLARIS AND INDUSTRY NEWS
The headlines below and others are available on our news page.

SUN STOKES FIRE OF 12 PROCESSOR SERVER | IDG
Sun has turned loose more details about the new 12-processor Sun Fire
v1280. The server will hold up to a dozen UltraSPARC III processors
running at 900MHz and pack support for Sun's most complex
partitioning and system reconfiguration tools. Sun is putting
high-end technology into less expensive systems in order to keep up
with IBM, according to one analyst. Sun's still mum on the v1280's
release date.

STAROFFICE SMELLS FREE IN DENMARK | vnunet
Something smells free in Denmark. It's StarOffice. Sun has announced
that it will donate StarOffice 6.0 to more than one million Danish
students and teachers. Sun claims that there are no strings to the
deal, which is worth more than $27 million.

MYSUN TO SET IN SPRING -- FOR GOOD | The Register
MySun will not come up March 25. Sun plans to unplug the free e-mail
service March 24. Sun claims it cannot support free e-mail service,
and considering the company has been laying off thousands of
employees, the decision is probably understandable.

SUN V. MICROSOFT SETS LEGAL PRECEDENT | The Associated Press
So what happens if Microsoft does in fact lose its appeal and must
put Sun Java in Windows? Life won't change much -- the greatest
impact of the decision could be the precedent-setting nature of the
case. A judge -- not engineers, software companies or users --
determined what is installed on personal computers, and that "first"
may ultimately change the industry.

MORE MICROSOFT FOES LINE UP TO APPEAL SETTLEMENT | CNET
Even more people find the Microsoft settlement unsettling. Two
groups, the Consumers for Computing Choice and the Open Platform
Working Group, have asked to intervene in the antitrust case. They're
appealing for meatier sanctions.

THE MISSING LINK | How 'bout them Apples! Jobs' autograph up for bid

Whose autograph is more valuable, the "father of our country" or the
co-father of our Apples? Seems like a no-brainer, but evidently more
of us need to get our brains checked. The signature of Steve Jobs has
been up for sale on e-Bay and is fetching bids of more than $800. By
comparison, George Washington's John Hancock usually goes for $500 to
$1,000. Of course, the premier president didn't ink his name on the
premier issue of Macworld magazine. Jobs did, and that fact has
probably pushed up the bidding for his handiwork. Autograph hounds on
a budget might want to check out Bill Gates. A signed copy of his
book "The Road Ahead" is going for about $25. (CNET)
