SOLARIS BUG THE BUZZ ON BUGTRAQ | ServerWatch
A Solaris bug is the buzz of Bugtraq this week. One security watchdog
claims the Solaris "wall" program, which is for writing messages to
users logged in to a system, can be made to send messages that appear
to be from any user on the local system. That increases the chances
of getting hoodwinked into opening a buggy message. The problem
reportedly affects Solaris 2.x-9 and maybe others borne of AT&T
source code. The expert says this problem is serious and requires a
Sun patch ASAP.

HP RESELLER BUSTED FOR ANTI-SUN COMMENTS | The Register
A U.K.-based HP reseller PSL is in trouble with the Advertising
Standards Authority (ASA) for disparaging comments it made about Sun
in a recent advertisement. In a direct e-mail to IT directors, PSL
claimed Sun is a generation behind in processor technology for not
embracing Itanium over its flagship Sparc chips. The company also
said that the HP PA-8700 processor was better than the UltraSPARC
III. The ASA ruled the advertisement was misleading and ordered the
company not to send the mail-shot again.

MACROMEDIA TRIES TO FIRE UP COLDFUSION | Computerworld
Macromedia has brought Sun ONE Application Server 7 into its
ColdFusion MX scripting environment. BEA's and IBM's latest app
servers are part of the program too. One analyst said that Macromedia
is trying to make ColdFusion a better place to build Java apps,
having lost developers to Microsoft's Active Server Pages and Java
Server Pages.

LIBERTY ALLIANCE LOOKING FOR PRODUCTIVE 2003 | IDG
Members of the Liberty Alliance Project have been polled, and it
looks like new ID management and authentication technologies will be
in the offing this year. Sun is a major backer of the alliance. For

File system security tricks | by Kurt Seifried

Like many Unix tools and most system infrastructures, the file system
portions of Unix are far more powerful then most people realize. Most
of the basic tricks, like software RAID, mounting options such as
"noexec" and splitting partitions up to prevent various attacks, are
well known. However, this barely scratches the surface of what is
possible.

THE MISSING LINK | Jeeves shows banner ads the door

Ask Jeeves, the servile search engine where the butler does it, does
not do banner ads. The site has gone "banner-free in 2003," claiming
that the banner ban will make life better for its users. Butlers do
hate clutter after all! Instead, you'll see what's called "Branded
Response and Premier Listings," where an unobtrusive selection of
commercial sites that are pertinent to your search neatly appear.
Jeeves doesn't do pop-ups either -- the butler did in those late last
year. (vnunet)
