SUN ROLLS OUT 13 NEW PRODUCTS | Mercury News
Sun is getting ready to roll out thirteen new N1-compliant hardware
products. The new products range from low-end blade servers that sell
for $1,800 each to 12-processor servers that cost $64,000. Sun is
also announcing new NAS products and cutting prices on some of its
high-end Sun Fire server products by up to 35 percent. The
competition says Sun is way behind in the game right now and is no
longer relevant when it comes to servers. Analysts, however, point
out that Sun has proven itself resilient and has managed to turn
around financial troubles in the past.

SUN COMPLEMENTS BLADE PLATFORM WITH NEW STORAGE SUITE
Sun is attacking the entry level by rolling out a NAS system, a Fibre
Channel array and a tape autoloader designed to complement the
company's blade computing platform. (SearchStorage.com)

HERE COMES SOLARIS 9 FOR INTEL | CRN
Sun has come through with Solaris 9 x86 Platform Edition. This
version that customers wanted, and now can get, has shipped. The
company also plans to deliver Solaris 9 with an integrated Sun One
software stack for both Unix and x86 by the end of this year. The
delivery signifies a change for Sun, which is moving cautiously
toward a new multiplatform approach.

SUN SOAKS UP COMMITMENTS TO X86 | CNET
Sun has been soaking up commitments to Solaris/x86. Companies like
Sybase, BEA, Verizon, AMD and Nuance have either endorsed x86, are
using it, or plan to release software for it.

MEMO CRITICIZES SOLARIS/JAVA RELATIONSHIP | eWEEK
In what appears to be an internal Sun memo, Sun engineers have
criticized the Java platform as it relates to Solaris, saying Java's
implementation on the OS is a hindrance to reliable applications. "We
do not believe these flaws are inherent in the Java platform but that
they relate to difficulties in our Solaris implementation," the memo
says. It can be seen on the InternalMemos.com Web site.

DESKTOP LINUX CONSORTIUM AIMS TO BREAK A FEW WINDOWS | CRN
A posse of the penguin's peeps is assembling to try and drive
Microsoft from the top of the desktop. Sun's friend Ximian, along
with Xandros, CodeWeavers, MandrakeSoft and SuSE Linux have united to
form the Desktop Linux Consortium. Their goal is to weaken
Microsoft's grip on the PC software market.

THE MISSING LINK | New technology keeps up disappearances

If you feel virtually invisible at work now, or if there are times
when you'd like to vanish into thin office air, just wait. Tangible
invisibility (oxymoron alert!) is on its way. A professor at the
University of Tokyo claims that he is creating the technology to make
you go away. It's not as easy as Harry Potter putting on a cloak. In
order to vanish, you have to wear a coat made of retroreflective
material, and the person to whom you want to appear to have
disappeared must look at you through a pinhole. Professor Invisible
hopes his disappearing act will be a commercially viable product in a
few years -- just enough time for magician David Copperfield to find
a new line of work. (The Associated Press)
