Starting in June, Orion will build all of Sun's software into the Solaris OS and it will be sold for a yearly subscription rate. Sun also plans to deliver a similar software configuration for Linux and update Solaris quarterly. Those quarterly updates will also include updates to all of the software built into the OS. (InternetWeek) SUN PLANS STANDALONE IM SERVER | BusinessWeek Sun plans to release a standalone instant messaging server product within the next few months. The new IM server will include support for the Linux operating system, and comes at a time when demand for enterprise IM technology is heating up. SUN BANKS ON MULTITHREADING TO BOOST ULTRASPARC | InformationWeek Sun has introduced a new strategy designed to increase application performance on its UltraSparc line of processors. Dubbed Throughput Computing, the plan relies heavily on multithreading technology on a single processor. Using this technology, Sun says in two years it will offer blade processors that can perform fifteen times faster than today's UltraSparc IIi blade processor. LINUX HOSTS MS OFFICE | ZDNet CodeWeavers has been busy at the Linux looms. The company has spun some new software that lets Linux servers host MS Office applications. The apps can be reached via a Web browser. Linux or Unix users can use the browser to get hold of Outlook, Word and other Office apps and not need any special client software to make it work. It's just napping. A new, less illegal version is about to wake up and hit the Net. The new owner, Roxio, says you'll see the nice, new Napster online by the end of the year -- just be ready to pony up some credit card info because the new service will be subscription based. Roxio bought Napster's name and intellectual property for $5 million last year at a bankruptcy sale and hired the Sultan of Swap (and Napster's founder) Shawn Fanning to be a consultant.
