Sun says J2EE 1.4 licensing is now available for partners and that they need to complete their testing ASAP. JBoss, an open-source group, seems to be getting Sun hot under the collar. JBoss supports J2EE 1.3, but doesn't seem too keen to move up, and thus could lose the "compliant" label. MCNEALY: TALKING SMACK IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS | CNET When Sun CEO Scott McNealy talks smack about Microsoft or any other foe, he's just engaging in good business practices -- according to him. On his swing through Asia, McNealy said that controversy and disagreement help companies make money. He then talked up N1 and Java smart cards and took a swipe at Intel, calling the Itanium chip a "serious disaster from a very good company." IDC: UTILITY COMPUTING, WEB SERVICES TO GIVE IT A BOOST | IDG IDC analysts said last week that 2002 was the worst year for the IT industry, but added that opportunities do exist. IT vendors have the chance to make money by helping companies simplify and integrate their systems. Also, firms would benefit from following Sun's and IBM's forays into utility computing, according to IDC. VIRUS QUANTITY DOWN, QUALITY UP | IDG A new study of computer viruses and worms shows that the quantity may be down, but the quality is up. Viruses are more of a constant threat and tend to linger longer. Security experts said this might mean the nature of infection is changing as new virus types creep up, connectivity expands and wireless devices become more prevalent. The headlines above and others are available on our news page. >> Full Stories: http://searchsolaris.techtarget.com/news/ ____________________________________________________________________ *********************** SPONSORED BY: Bytek ************************ The Sun Ultra 5 giveaway is back !! However, they believe that when it comes to running legacy applications, these operating systems will not replace OS/390 and z/OS because of the reliability, flexibility, scalability and interoperability of the two systems. >> For more on multi-platform integration in the data center, CLICK: http://search390.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid10_gci853178,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= FEATURED WHITE PAPER | Securing the Linux environment Need help securing Linux systems? But technologists are trying to keep the tuna from floating to the top of the endangered species list. Scientists have developed a scalable (literally!) computer that they can stick inside a live yellowfin whopper. The computer then records and transmits data about the host's life and social habits. Tuna are a very private species, and these techno tunas (the big ones that can't get away) will transmit data that researchers can use to advise the fishing industry on ways to keep the schools swimming. Overfishing is a concern because tuna have such a special place in the hearts, palates, pantries and casseroles of so many humans. >> CLICK: http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsArticle.jhtml?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyID=2443693 >> Want to hear more offbeat tales from the world of information technology?
