Not sure which command or area of the compile causes it but it seems you
forgot to do something. Maybe didn't copy over system.map or bzImage file?
Maybe need to rerun /sbin/lilo again for new kernel to take affect?

I didn't do make mrproper Linus's instructions only referred to that when
talking about patching the kernel. I did did "make oldconfig" "make modules"
and "make modules_install" as well as "make dep" "make bzImage" "make
install" and last "/sbin/lilo" without the options -v -v should I just start
over?
