Gentle folks,

Recently I installed RH 7.1 as the fresh installation. It is KDE/Gnome
workstation. Well, I have discovered that almost whenever a GUI is
starting (either at system boot or with startx), there is a point where
GUI's panel should be initialized. On that point, my CDROM looks like it
expects a disk to be inserted, i.e. a lamp of the CDROM drive is
blinking a couple of times and sometimes a sound of its motor can be
heard for a moment. It lasts for a 5-6 seconds and when it is finished,
I finally get the panel so can use the GUI.

Sometimes, I don't get a panel at all, so I can't use GUIs and I have to
kill it with Ctrl-Alt-Backspc. When I kill it, I get an info that ATAPI
on /dev/hdb (that is CDROM) has some accessing problem or so. The only
cure is to reboot the system.

I have found a tool called magicdev that looked to me to make problems
and I have deinstalled it. But, I still have the same problem often.

Actually, whenever I boot/start into a GUI as root, I get a warning:

===============================================

magicdev

Not response to the Save Yourself command.
The program may be slow, stopped or broken.
You may wait for it to respond or remove it.

Remove Program / Cancel

===============================================

Even I click on Remove Program, next time I start GUI there is another
warning like that.

Before 7.1 I used 6.2 without such a problem. My CDROM is LG CRD-8240B.
Any help?

Misko
