This used to be correct with older versions of Apache, but not with 1.3.x

In version 1.3.x this is indeed the correct way to define virtualhosts.
Check your documentation, the example config shipped with some copies of
1.3.6 is incorrect IIRC.
If it doesn't work, something else must be broken. Do you perhaps have more
than one IP interface on the server?
Finally, keep in mind that name based virtualhosts only works with HTTP1.1
and newer, which means that very old browsers like IE and NS version 2.0
will fail. Very old proxy/cache software can also cause problems, for the
same reason. This is usually not a problem these days, but I just thought
I'd mention it.
