In other words, I would take this thing offline, search for rootkits,
save your data, format and re-install.

adn NEVER NEVER NEVER use telnet again.  AND if you DO use telnet, NEVER
use telnet as root, or to gain root access.  thats just a security
incident waiting to happen.
