Hello to all,
I hope someone can help me with a problem that is
certainly testing the limits of the little I know
about networking and ports.
I have two identical computers (Dell Optiplex GX1).
In both I installed RH 7.1 out of the same CD (full
install, not upgrade). In both I applied all updates,
including kernel 2.4.3-12.
Aside from installation and upgrades, I did not touch
anything in either computer that was not replicated
exactly in the other.
I tried to install the same packages in both, but since
I selected them by hand, I cannot be 100% sure...
In both I selected, at installation, the "high security"
firewall, and in both I checked ssh (port 22) to be open.
In both I have an identical file /etc/sysconfig/ipchains,
and in both /etc/sysconfig/firewall is empty.
In both, ipchains -L produces this line (among others)
ACCEPT tcp -y---- anywhere anywhere any -> ssh
and the default policy is ACCEPT (actually, the whole
outpup for ipchains -L is identical for both computers).
However, a portscan (with nmap) of both machines tells me
that port 22 is open in one but closed in the other
(closed, not filtered).
Does anyone have any idea what could possibly be closing
port 22, and how I could open it???
Thanks a million,
Marcelo
