I had that problem initially when I installed jre-1.3.0_01 from a
tarball, which installed the plug-in under
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/. I was finally able to get it working
with mozilla 0.9.1. (There was some discussion, and a solution, posted
on this list or the redhat list.) It stopped working when I installed
mozilla 0.9.2. Any page containing java would lock up the browser as
soon as it began loading the page. The only way to get the browser to
exit was killall -KILL java_vm. See below for how I got it working
again.

To get mine working again, I downloaded j2re-1_3_1-linux-i386-rpm.bin
file from the Sun site, chmod +x the script and run it. It presents the
license, and unpacks the rpm. rpm -ivh jre-1.3.1.i386.rpm, chdir
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, rm libjavaplugin_oji.so, (which was a link to
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so)
Finally ln -s /usr/java/jre1.3.1/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Seems to work fine again. Since it worked, I did
rm -Rf /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/ just to be rid of the old
jre-1.3.0_01 files.

Hope that helps,

-D
