I once tried it for fun to install by hand. It technically wasn't that hard.
I made a minimal disk system (etc, home, usr, ... dirs), put in an empty
rpm-database and started the "rpm -Uvh" sequences with a root-directive.
The hard part was learning the right sequence to install the different
rpm-packages.
It was fun, but using anaconda is faster for sure.
