My problem happened when I did an su - to root to run xvidtune. Turns out 
that's illegal. I have to physically log in as root to both xvidtune and 
xf86cfg to work. Ok. That's for posterity.

Now a constructive question: Is this a bug? Or is this behavior 
acceptable?
