kernel compilation is quite easy...

make xconfig
make dep
make clean
make modules
make bzImage

then move bzImage to /boot and modify ur lilo.conf to point to the new image and then 
run lilo once before rebooting..

in case u want a boot floppy make sure u create it with the new kernel
