On my IBM Thinkpad I had to add the intern_disp/extern_disp options to the
"Device" section in the X config file. E.g.:
Section "Device"
Identifier "NeoMagic"
VendorName "MagicGraph 256 AV 48K"
Option "hw_cursor"
Option "intern_disp"
Option "extern_disp"
EndSection
