I just upgraded my system to kernel-2.4.9-12.i686.rpm. I now cannot
run "modprobe ppa". I get:

[root@charlesc /root]# modprobe ppa
modprobe: Can't locate module ppa

I believe the module is there:

[root@charlesc /root]# locate ppa.o
/lib/modules/2.4.9-12/kernel/drivers/scsi/ppa.o

I have the following kernel packages installed:
[root@charlesc /root]# pre kernel
kernel-2.4.9-12
kernel-headers-2.4.9-12

The processor is:

vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 6
model : 3
model name : AMD Duron(tm) Processor
stepping : 1
cpu MHz : 800.040
cache size : 64 KB

I do not have this problem with the kernel-2.4.9-12.i386.rpm package
on another computer:

[root@tester /root]# uname -a
Linux tester.localdomain 2.4.9-12 #1 Tue Oct 30 18:41:57 EST 2001 i586 unknown
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 5
model : 2
model name : Pentium 75 - 200
stepping : 12
cpu MHz : 132.770

On a third computer, which I think I upgraded with the i386 package, I
also have no problems with modprobe ppa.
[root@teckla /root]# uname -a
Linux teckla.localdomain 2.4.9-12 #1 Tue Oct 30 18:33:49 EST 2001 i686 unknown
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 5
model name : Pentium II (Deschutes)
stepping : 2
cpu MHz : 134.558

Two other oddities:

1) I had to run depmod manually, to get around this error message:

[root@charlesc /root]# modprobe ppa
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/modules.dep (No such file
or directory)

2) uname reports incorrect kernel:

[ccurley@charlesc ccurley]$ uname -a
Linux charlesc.localdomain 2.4.2-2 #1 Sun Apr 8 20:41:30 EDT 2001 i686 unknown
