Koos,it seems,at first reading,a problem related to firewall rules:
ipchains/iptables

or even to sendmail starting problem:/etc/rc.d/init.d
[run a 'ps -ax | grep sendmail' to check]

or possibly even to /etc/hosts.allow hosts.deny rules.

But AFAIK sendmail,as all standard SMTP servers,is listening on tcp port 25.
