One way to stop ISP timeout:

put in /etc/crontab:

3,18,33,58 * * * * root ping -c 4 xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa &> /dev/null

where xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa is a machine belonging to your ISP
(e.g. dns.ISP.com or www.ISP.com)

thus if timeout is more than 15 minutes your machine
will stay online

Of course you should try "ping -c 4 xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa" to make sure
it works and is not filtered out or anything like that -
so you may have to change it to some other command if icmp is
filtered out of your connection from you to your ISP

I guess some ISP's may ignore icmp packets when calculating timeouts,
in which case you will have to run some other command that accesses
the external net (e.g. "wget http://www.ISP.com/SomeVerySmallPageOrFile";)
