thanks for the quick reply Tim. (I've to get 7 of these running today!!)
I hadn't heard of lspci, but after running it I see it does say:
"Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd RTL-8139 (rev 10)"
So I guess rtl8139 is what I'm after.
Well I had a quick look and all I could see was 8139too (under
/lib/modules/2.4.9-12/kernel/drivers/net), so I added that to my 
modules.conf file, and that seems to work.
