I had a similar problem .. checksums all ok  both disks working fine in another comp 
( did you tried the disks in another machine ? ) Only the second disk would give 
similar
errors as your's.Turned out that once the lens in the cd rom got cleaned all disks  
went in fine.
What's  worst is that it only did it with a homeburnt cd.Never with published cd's.
So i was dismissing cd rom drive error..Thing is, with the airflow in my box pulling 
air in from the 
front ( like many units ) you just pull in dust and fumes onto this rather delicate 
lens.
I used an optician's polishing cloth with alcohol.May i remind you this is a delicate 
assembly
and very fragile.There are disks made to clean a cd ..brushes ( 2 ) are glued to a CD 
and
spins over the lens..I find this be a crude method but works for some.
