If you really tried to install with "rpm -i wu-ftpd" you should have
gotten "error: open of wu-ftpd failed: No such file or directory".
Perhaps you correctly gave the full name of the file instead of just
"wu-ftpd". Another test of whether you have wu-ftpd is "rpm -q wu-ftpd".
If wu-ftpd is present, it may be that /etc/hosts.deny and hosts.allow
are not allowing access to it. And does "chkconfig --list wu-ftpd" say
that wu-ftpd is on?
Today when I updated a RedHat 7.0 system, the rpm database got messed
up, though with quite different symptoms from yours. In my case, the
command "rpm --rebuilddb" seemed to fix the database.
