This is the same thing I got when it got to the end of tape. I have 
tried the -L option to tar, and can't get it to work correctly.

There is a free backup program called arkeia (http://www.arkeia.com/) 
which is difficult to set up, but works great. There is also BRU 
(http://www.bru.com/), which will do what you want, but it is commercial 
software, and you will have to buy it.
