That's great that you have a backup!

I have an Archive Python (2GB) DAT, and it seems that it I shut the 
machine down, I MUST power cycle the DAT, otherwise, it does not get 
seen by the scsi card when I power the machine back on. Since you have 2 
scsi cards, that may be a factor as well.

Modules get loaded as needed, such as when the machine detects new 
hardware, or when you manually do a modprobe or insmod. Some modules 
will unload themselves if they are not used after some period of time.
