Definitely a good idea. You may want to look into just using ssh/sftp instead of telnet/ftp. Funny, I cannot find anything on /dev/.id/* in google. It is a good bet that you have been hacked though. Make sure that you format all partitions when you reinstall, and use a firewall.I have no security on this, I have disabled the ftp stuff now, and I know this is probably the problem. I think I am going to re-install the server, and during the install, set up the personal firewall and lockdown the ftp.
What else is in the /dev/.id directory? Can you see who owns the files?
