Yes the card is a "RealPort Xircom 10/100 Ethernet 56k modem (
REM56G-100 )".
Can you try a shutdown without the modem present
(cardctrl eject <socket # for modem> ) perhaps
even boot without the modem, and never install it.
Can I do that? Isn't the modem activated by the driver to the card
everytime?
oops. It's a combo card. I was thinking 2 cards.
Intel bought Xircom. I see the RealPort line is no long available
in the US (3com sued)
http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/resources/xir_crossref.htm
says the REM56G-100BTX is now the REM56G, and the Cardbus version
RBEM56G-100BTX is now RBEM56G.
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/pcmcia_list.html lists the CardBus
version as supported. You need to compare the FCC ID to be sure,
but the non CardBus version should work too.
Maybe I can disable the serial to start at boot, but then it will effect the
built in serial ports?
I tried 'carctl eject 1' but then it hang, I found out that #1 was the
pcmcia port the card used.
It should not hang there.
we need some more debug data.
When it hangs, can you run dmesg in another terminal/VC?
Can you reconfigure syslog to save everything?
Edit /etc/syslog.conf. at the end add
*.* /var/log/all.log
the run 'service syslog restart'
On one VC run 'tail -f /var/log/all.log'
On another VC try the eject command again.
Switch VCs and see what is going on.
Also try booting without the card, then start the
above tail, insert the card, wait for it to configure,
then eject it. Send the section of all.log from
insertion to the hang on eject.
I'll look over the PCMCIA scripts to figurout what
it's doing with the serial port(modem)
Is it normal to have a modem at ttyS* ?
Maybe I should try and install an dialup account for the modem and see if
it's working properly.
Not sure it matters. I have a few ideas though.
1) try a plain NIC, w/o a modem.
that should work fine.
2) configure PCMCIA to ignore the modem.
not sure how to do that though.
I don't use PCMIA much. I have 2 socket in my
desktop. 99% of the use is for a CF->PCMCIA
adaptor to access the CF cards from my camera.
I also used it to program a card from Midori and
the FIC Aquapad. And I used it to test a wireless
NIC.
