You can (and should, I think) use rsync with openssh in order to make it secure. The failure before would happen if (wisely, I think) your computers are set up to prevent use of the insecure rsh. Assuming you have openssh installed, try modifying your command to rsync -e ssh ipass:/home/gary/abc.txt /tmp/def.txt
