Nils,

I can tell you one way to do it in a Cisco switched environment (using
Switch IOS):

1. From a machine (could be the router) on the same network as the device,
display the arp table and look for the ip address in question.
2. From the switch, issue a show cam <mac address>. This will show you the
card and port with which that mac address is associated.

I would like to know how to locate a device on my network.
The only thing I know is the IP-address, and I would really like to know
what switch and portnumber the device is connected to.
