I do believe -1 would be just that on -5:00 GMT (US Eastern EDT I think).... one second before January 1st 1970 0:00:00....
And I do believe you can send an email through SMTP and set the date yourselt... RFC822 if I recall correctly... (can be found on www.faqs.org) Hope this helps...
