Hi Folks,
First of all , Id like to thank you guys who are giving me support to solve this problem. Let me give you some information : 1-About almost a month ago , we had problems with Nimda virus ( we had the Norton Anti-virus but not updated ). So the performance of our network was terrible and we solved it the next day. 2-But we discovered that some users didnt have NAV in their windows 95 boxes. They simply deleted it, saying that it slowed down the machine. 3- So I suspect that : - we have many desktops without NAV - they are infected with Virus ( nimda and stuff like that ) thus impacting in the overall traffic 4- My topology is quite simple: we have a L3 Nortel Switch Accelar 1100 and each port is a IP Vlan , so we have 16 vlan , in other words, 16 segments. But 1 vlan is for the servers which is the main target of the desktops. The Pc desktops dont have interest into exchanging information among them. Their main purpose is to access the servers vlan. 5- At first I put a analyzer ( Domino Lan from WWG ) between the nortel switch and the L2 Switch , a " man in the middle " topology , and the utilization of each segment was nothing more than 30%, in the worst cases. 6- so Id like sniff the segment itself to see if there is something "strange" ( a virus , internet sharing , in other words, whats is causing the L3 to run out of CPU ) congestioning the L2 switches, do you know what I mean ? I hope that theses information have cleared some doubts... thx, Jacques -----Mensagem original----- De: Pradeep Kumar [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Enviada em: segunda-feira, 29 de outubro de 2001 13:48 Para: Jacques Chicourel Nunes Vaz - BA; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Assunto: RE: Packet Sniffing in a Switched LAN My question to you is - what are you going to do with the sniffed traffic. Are you clear on what you want to "read off ". Sniffing tools are used for troubleshooting. What is your purpose ? -----Original Message----- From: Jacques Chicourel Nunes Vaz - BA [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2001 10:33 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: Packet Sniffing in a Switched LAN Hi folks, I have a Lan with 200 desktops and Id like to sniff it. What tool can I use to see all the packets ( going and coming ) ? Any suggestions ? Regards, Jacques
