Actually, there are programs that can and will destroy a hard drive, typically it will only destroy the contents of the drive (reformat/repartition). I personally use such a program to wipe out the master boot record of a drive to clean it for fresh OS installs. The one I use is only 8 kb in size and does the trick in about a second, and with out any warning as to what is about to do. These types of programs can be very dangerous to your data if you are not careful when using them.
