the only way to get the real version is:

# ssh -V

note that when you upgrade (if from *tar.gz) not necessarily the new 
version will sit in the proper (old) path. So, if the version 
information is not the one you are expecting for, just find it:

# whereis ssh

then query the complete path (say: /usr/local/sbin/ssh -V) instead of 
just 'ssh -V'


BTW, in my machine it is the final portion, after the OpenSSH 
information (3.0.2p1)
