When every click of the mouse results in MIME type matching
to a file extension (or mime header in the file) your OS is going 
to be slow. Windows was first just a graphical menu program! 
It still is.

Integration of IE has only given software developers easy
access to the user interface.  You get rid of IE, you then cripple
OUTHOUSE/OE, MS Office and many more MS products.

What you are left with is a handful of robust third party software. 
I don't see a downside to this?  Do you?
