With regard to SSL, the public key cryptogrpahy is
only used as an authentication mechanism and to
distribute a shared secret. That shared secret is
then used to encrypt the data between client a server.

Public key crypto mechanisms are not as efficient as
symmentric mechanisms for encrypting small pieces
of data.
