if it's an rpm based system (like RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, Turbolinux, etc) 
you can get the patch from the vendor, here are the sites for most vendors.
redhat:
        http://www.redhat.com/apps/support/errata/index.html
mandrake:
        http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/security/
suse:
        http://www.suse.com/en/support/download/updates/index.html
turbolinux: (they don't seem to have a php patch ready)
        http://www.turbolinux.com/security/

to install the rpms affer you d/l them, open up a terminal and run:
"rpm -Fvh /wherever/they/are/at/php*.rpm" or use some gui rpm tool.

For debian use apt-get php or something, for tarball distribs like 
slackware(ugh) just d/l the source and recompile.
