Morning Math, In the past there have been significant differences between the the two. MS is doing a better job of providing security patches through Windows Update, but (last time I checked) there were still some differences.
You best bet (for now) is to "rely" on Windows Update for everyday things and follow the Security Bulletin site for security patches. Make sure you've signed up for the Security Notification Mailing list, but *don't* rely on it to provide your notification (there have been some recent reports from people who did not receive notices).
