I believe (again this is my belief) that the DoD specifies that data must be wiped 7 times with random data to be considered "ok" for disposing. I would also like to point out that this may not be enough. Some advanced forensic companies seem to recover data no matter what. You should consider doing this and then running the hard drive against a de-gauging (sp?) machine.
