I'm assuming that Microsoft's implementation of s/mime and digital
signatures is not open source.  You might want to consider an open
source alternative if any exists for wintel platforms.  That way, the
source is out in the community and subject to scrutiny by folks whose
primary motivation is the integrity of the code.
