Seems like an overly broad question to me. Before we can give you any ideas
on security we'd need to know what you're protecting, from whom, what the
requirements of the backbone are, what your budget is....

For example: fiber is more secure than copper in that it's very difficult to
tap, but you may not have the budget for that and perhaps you have the
entire length of the backbone physically secured and aren't worried about
people tapping it.

How important is it to you to encrypt your backbone traffic? What physical
distances does your backbone cover and under what circumstances? Are you
concerned with protecting it from national security agencies or script
kiddies? What's your budget? What's the platform, what security measures
have you taken throughout the rest of the network, what kind of experience
does your IT staff have....

If your data is valuable it's probably a good idea for you to seek out a
qualified security consultant who can come to your site(s) and give you a
more thorough review and suggest solutions.
