1) A DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) is a network configured on a separate subnet
than your internal network.  It's purpose is to allow you to place
externally accessible machines such as an email server, a web server, or an
ftp server on that network while keeping external access isolated.  

2) See the DMZ - 2 firewall, or 1 firewall + router thread for configuration
options.
