Personally, I like the rather automated approach Blighty took.  If you haven't used 
Sam Spade, you can paste an entire message into it and it will check and resolve URLs 
and IP addresses, plus offer a little guidance in determining, for example, the true 
source server.

Such automation might be nice to have, even as a front end to the existing tools.

erm... you mean like having tracert, whois, ping, and nslookup available on
nix?  Sam Spade was designed to make all these tools available in windows.
Or do you mean a GUI interface for them?
