Its not only Verisign that plays dirty when it comes to domain name renewal. I
had domains registered with Register.com and decided to switch to a less
expensive service when my renewals came due. The new registrar needed me to
release my domains with Register.com, however, after three weeks of repeated
calls, email and outrageous hold times, I was told by Register.com that my name
had expired and BY LAW I had to renew with them. They told me they had
repeatedly sent emails in regards to transferring my domain, but the only email
I received from them were the warnings that my domains were expiring--
absolutely NOTHING about transferring them to someone else. When I logged on to
my account at Register.com to grant permission for the transfer, the option
available under the button that said "Transfer Domain to another register" only
pointed back to Register.com. When my website went down (due to non-renewal
although I had renewed via another registrar) I was hopping mad. The only way
I could get my site back up was to pay the ransom to Register.com and promptly
transfer the domain verbally while I had the little weasel on the line who
fleeced me for $12 instead of their normal $35. Now I get all sorts of spam
from them with 'special deals' to come back.
