In my experience, Red Hat 7.3 or 8.0 - entirely because of the
installer. It's easy and fast and it works.
RH9 doesn't have the check-the-X-config button, and writes very odd
things to XF86Config.
I'd have said 8.0, but I'm in the middle of a 'discussion' with the RH8
installer trying to get the X configuration to work on a Dell Latitude
600. It seems to work during the install, but sometimes gets into an
interesting failure mode where the screen fades to white around the
edges, and the machine stops responding to everything but the power
button.
7.3, if I remember correctly, couldn't probe the monitor but worked just
fine if I told it the monitor was a Dell laptop 1400. And with the
checkX button you can change things around if it doesn't.
I like Debian's politics better, but I've never been able to get it
installed and working on the laptop - entirely because of the installer.
