I disagree. This may very well be a chance for Thawte to lose money due
to the flaws in their system. I feel that they are working the best they
can to ensure that these flaws cause as little impact to their clients and
their business as possible.
If they were sending you an email about an SSL certificate acquired
through GeoTrust or VeriSign, I could understand it being a ploy to
generate business.

In a word, no.
During my day job, we have several clients that have SSL certificates
through Thawte. Thawte has been very nice about sending emails about 60
and 30 days before the certificate expires. When a certificate is allowed
to lapse, they do have a tendency to call.
If you have no intention to renew this certificate, tell them this and ask
them to stop sending you emails. If you do intend to renew this
certificate through Thawte, just go ahead and do it already. Usually,
when they start sending emails, you won't lose any time remaining on the
current certificate. (I'm not 100% sure on this. I know this is the case
with GeoTrust.)
It is *very* important to renew your SSL certificate if you are going to
continue to use it. Yes, continuing to use your SSL certificate after the
expiration date will still provide encryption, but it will no longer be
trusted by web browsers. And clients get really antsy when they see
certificate errors when they go to a website.
