this is where you probably would love Knoppix since it more or less is a
Debian-live-cd (boots and runs entirely off your cd-drive with the option of
being installed to a hd drive of your choice). most amazing about Knoppix is
that it has a pretty gread hardware detection / auto-configuration mechanism
based on a 2.4.20-xfs kernel. besides the sound (via82xx-onboard-chip) I was
able to completely use all the hardware inside my notebook just while putting
the cd in the drive and waiting until it came up. once having it installed to
your hard drive, then, you might use it like a "normal" Debian-system
(including the package management) :)
