Your best bet is try gaining experience with your current company. Most Information Security departments are more willing to hire from within than from outside.
Most Security Professionals have a varied background. Most of the ones I have met have a background in System Administration, some are Network professional and a few have been software developers. I will say the best ones have a little bit of experience in all areas of Information Technology.
