I had this problem before with a regular mandrake install. Go into your 
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. Add a line that says MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes 
to it. This will disable heartbeat detection which doesn't work in VMWare. It should 
work fine from then on.
