Hi Anirban, It's true that Sedna Java API is both low level and proprietary.
Sedna XML:DB API does not work on top of Sedna Java API, it has been written from scratch with high performance and stability in mind. It has been unit tested to death and new developments have ended on this project. I have been working on an XQJ (JSR 225) Driver for Sedna, it is functionally complete and passes roughly 60% of the Oracle's XQJ Technology Compatibility Kit.
