You can grow plants from store produce seeds, however if they're
hybrid or genetically modified vegetables as most commercially raised
produce is, they probably won't produce true to variety. They may
germinate but not produce fruit. Its basically just experimentation.
I have used dry beans and melons with some success. Be aware also
that a lot of store produce is harvested before it is actually mature,
so seeds aren't viable. If you're going to try to use seeds from
grocery store produce, at least buy organics. As far as germination,
that depends on the species. Some plant seed are viable immediately,
some require a cold period as in their natural growing cycle before
they will germinate.
I have also had some success with rooting fresh herb cuttings from the
grocery.
