I was hoping someone on the list might be able to suggest a personal PC
firewall for my use. I recently purchased and installed Norton Internet
Security 2000 (it is based on the now-defunct AtGuard product), but was
very unhappy with the difficulty of configuring the program so that my
internet applications would work correctly. In fact, many of the
videoconferencing applications which I use were unable to accept
incoming calls due to problems I was having configuring NIS2000.
Needless to say, I am usually very pleased with Symantec Products....
not this one....
Anyway, I was looking for suggestions for other internet security and
firewall type products. The product must have the following
characteristics:
1. Easily configured. I should be able to start an internet
application. The first time the application is started, the
security/firewall program should notice it is a new program, configure
itself properly to allow the internet application to function properly,
and from then on accept the internet application and allow incoming and
outgoing traffic.
2. Fully protect me from hackers and unauthorized access to my PC. I
have an antivirus product that I am happy with (Norton AV 2000), so I do
not need virus protection.
3. The product should use minimal system resources.
4. The product should be fully compatible with all internet
applications, and should allow all internet applications to run properly
no matter what security level I have defined. BlackIce Defender and
Conceal Private Desktop have known problems with IRC applications, ICQ,
and some videoconferencing applications.
Does anyone have any suggestions? What products do you use and are you
happy with?
