Ken,

I am associated with the China University of Geosciences Beijing as a
Specially-Appointed Professor, and I travel there frequently for weeks
at a time to give lectures and advise students, although not for a year now.

CUGB and sister universities, such as CUGW (Wuhan), are PACKED with
students. And not only Chinese students but I have met quite a few
African students being trained in China. China is all over sub-Saharan
Africa, and perhaps training is part of the package that was negotiated
with the various national governments.

The problem is the nature of student training in China. It is very
hierarchical - the Professor is always right and is never questioned, so
critical, independent thought is not prioritized. I have also found
generally that Chinese students are very siloed - the various
Departments stay very separate from each other.

To my mind this is anathema to what we need going forward, which is a
broad, holistic, inquisitive approach to geoscience training.
